04 · The question

How do you get your first data center job?

Asked again and again on Reddit: How do you get a job at a data center? · How did you get your first DC technician job at AWS/Google/Microsoft? · No response from AWS data center job application

We read 391 data center technician postings in our database to see what employers actually ask for. Three things stand out.

  1. Shift and on-call work is the norm. 71% of the technician postings mention on-call duty, rotating shifts, nights, weekends or 12-hour shifts (75% at Amazon, 57% at other employers). Being upfront that you can work them is one of the easiest ways to stand out.
  2. Electrical and hardware basics matter more than certificates. 43% mention electrical systems or electrical experience. CompTIA Network+ shows up in 25% of postings and A+ in 4%: useful, but usually listed as a plus rather than a must.
  3. There are more doors than the big three. This week alone, colocation and IT services firms (Flexential, EOS IT Solutions, infraservices) posted technician roles, and a career center in Ohio is hiring a data center technician instructor, a sign that local training programs are starting near new campuses. Smaller employers and contractors are a common first step before AWS, Google or Microsoft.

For electricians, the way in usually runs through the contractors building the sites: this week JE Dunn, Barton Malow and Manhattan Construction all posted mission critical superintendent roles. Apprentice and helper spots are scarcer than the headlines suggest, a frustration that comes up often on r/electricians.
